It is with joy in our hearts that we welcome the gift that the Holy Father, Pope Francis, has given us today with the nomination of H.E. Mgr. Luis Marin de San Martin OSA and Sr Nathalie Becquart, XMCJ, as Under-secretaries of the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops.

There are two, rather than only one as in the past, as testimony to the task of building up an authentically synodal Church, something that is important and much needed. For our Secretariat their arrival is an invitation to grow in collaboration and in the work of the team. Each one brings their own richness and specific identities, formation and spirituality, to be put at the service of ecclesial communion: for H.E. Mgr. Marin de San Martin, he brings a deep knowledge of the Council, experience of accompanying religious congregations and Augustinian spirituality; for Sr Becquart, she brings a theological depth of understanding of synodality, experience of working with youth for the Bishops’ Conference of France and Ignatian spirituality.

In particular, the addition of a religious woman on the Secretariat team constitutes an enrichment, opening up possibilities for accompaniment and support that we can offer to the Church at local, national and regional levels - all of whom will be travelling with us on a synodal journey, confirming the importance of the Synod of Bishops for the Universal Church.
