Third Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops

In Session: 5 - 19 October 2014

Synod Fathers: 191

Topic: Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization

The social and spiritual crisis  in the world were posing pastoral challenges to the Church in evangelizing the family, the vital building-block of society and the ecclesial community – because of this the Holy Father decided to convoke a synodal assembly,  which was to tackle the challenges using a two-staged approach. Firstly, with an Extraordinary General Assembly in 2014, intended to define the “status quæstionis” and to collect the bishops’ experiences and proposals in proclaiming and living the Gospel of the Family in a credible manner. Secondly, with an Ordinary General Assembly in 2015 to seek working guidelines in the pastoral care of the person and the family.

To this end, the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops prepared and mailed the Preparatory Document, which included a series of 39 questions, intended to generate interest and information on the subject from the General Secretariat’s customary respondents, i.e., the synods of the Eastern Catholic Churches sui iuris, the episcopal conferences, the dicasteries of the Roman Curia and the Union of Superiors General. There was an overwhelming response, not simply from these Church bodies but from individuals and groups the world over.

The third Extraordinary General Assembly produced a final document which then served as a basis for the Instrumentum Laboris of the subsequent Ordinary General Assembly.
